What we do

There have been real increases in the establishment of protected areas over the last few decades.  But many protected areas with significant potential for conservation do not have the appropriate conditions in place to become truly effective conservation zones.  There are many reasons for this, but one is the serious challenge of translating knowledge into management actions.

The Science & Management of Protected Areas Association works to reduce this challenge.

How?  By providing opportunities for managers, conservation practitioners, and researchers to exchange information and have informed discussions about management, conservation, and the future of protected areas.

To achieve this purpose SAMPAA organizes  international conferences to promote dialogue, and provides access to emerging knowledge through our publications.

We are currently expanding our organization to offer more services.

Knowledge includes current peer- reviewed ecological, physical, environmental and social sciences, and Aboriginal or local knowledge stemming from long-term experience.
